Binding block is also known as concrete masonry or CMU. They are rectangular blocks used in building construction and come in a variety of sizes. The blocks usually have a hollow core to provide space for longitudinal reinforcement. These hollow areas, called cells, can be filled  with concrete for added durability. Blocks are structural and are often used to build foundation walls. They are installed one by one and held together by grout joints. Typically, a cement block wall is built on a  solid foundation of solid concrete. The weight of the binder block depends on the size of the block and its density. One of the most common size blocks used in construction, known as standard blocks, is 8" x 8". x 16 inches and  weighs 38 lbs. / 17kg. 

Concrete blocks are made from poured concrete. Concrete is used to make binder blocks containing cement and aggregates. Aggregates may contain ash material such as industrial waste, fly ash, coal dust, bottom ash, recycled material, cement slag  or recycled aggregate. Ash is what gives concrete blocks the nickname cinder block. 

Cement blocks are designed to be lightweight blocks, also known as low-density blocks. However, they can still be quite heavy.  12 in. The 8" x 16" hollow  block weighs 52 lbs / 23.5 kg. each block. What Is the Difference Between Cinder Blocks and Concrete Blocks?

Visually, cement blocks and concrete blocks are very similar. They are virtually indistinguishable, which is why the term is used interchangeably, but the materials used to make them are very different. Here is the difference between cement block and concrete block. 

Cinder Blocks

The blocks are made of ash and small  concrete, and they are lightweight due to the number of aggregate components compared to other materials. They are much weaker and do not hold up well, which is one of the most important factors in building blocks. These blocks are usually less expensive because the ash is mostly recycled waste.

Concrete Blocks

Concrete blocks are building blocks made of cement, sand, gravel and water. These blocks are quite heavy and bulky, but they are one of the favorite building blocks of many structural engineers due to their durability. Concrete blocks are much stronger than cement blocks, which is why they have replaced old blocks in many projects.  

How Much Does A Hollow 4 x 8 x 16 Cinder Block Weigh?

The 4" x 8" x 16" hollow cinder block is shaped  like a 4" solid block, with only  two small hollow cells. This lightens the block and provides some space for thin reinforcement and concrete. Because the block has hollow cells, it is installed vertically rather than horizontally or flat. This means that the 4-inch hollow  blocks are not used as pancake racks or caps. They are used more for shaping or adding a bit of ore thickness to the wall. For example, a 14-inch thick cement brick wall can be made of 10-inch bricks and 4-inch bricks. Because hollow blocks have space in the center, they are lighter than solid blocks and absorb less water. This means they are lighter when wet and dry. How much does a 4-inch hollow  block of coal weigh? A typical 4-inch hollow  block of coal weighs 24 lbs or 11 kg. It is 9 lbs/4 kg. less than a 4-inch solid  block. That is dry weight. But because a 4-inch hollow block has cells, they don't absorb as much water as solid blocks. But they can still hold about 1/2 pound of water.
